Every version of Hidden Roof, the free multiplayer graffiti game in your browser, newest first. The same notes are in the game under Esc → About → Updates.
a whole new feel to painting, reworked audio, improved hints, and a few extra goodies for your next rooftop run.
painting
a new way to paint: strokes now lay down continuous lines of paint instead of clouds of dots: paint lands instantly under your aim, with no gaps, no matter how fast you move
speed and coverage: move fast for lighter, wider, softer lines; slow down for denser, sharper ones. hold your aim in one spot and paint builds up, darkens, then starts to run: heavier coverage runs longer
distance matters: get up close for narrow, crisp lines, or step back for wider, softer ones
pressure (opacity): hold Shift and scroll with the can in hand to set it from 5% to 100%: each pass builds on the last, so you can work up a fade
streamline: smooths your lines as the brush trails your aim a little, set it in Settings → General
a smarter crosshair: it shows the line you're about to leave, adjusting to your cap, distance and hand speed, and your pressure too, and it fades where the paint won't reach
spray you can see: every cap has its own soft plume at the nozzle, from a thin jet to a wide cloud: it follows your pressure, and other players see it too. spray at an angle and paint stretches along your aim, fading towards the far end
caps
six caps to choose from, each with its own feel, from fine details to big fills.
NEEDLE (new): ultra-fine lines for sharp details and highlights
SKINNY: clean tags and crisp outlines
BANANA: a versatile all-rounder for everyday painting
BLUE DOT (new): soft edges for smooth blends and fades
NY FAT: wide lines for throw-ups and quick fills
ASTRO FAT: massive coverage for big fills and backgrounds
marker, roller, sponge
the marker and the roller can trigger runs in wet paint too, just like the can
the crosshair shows the actual size of all three on the wall and fades where they wouldn't reach
hints
hints now sound more natural and use first-person phrasing: "I can spray with LMB"
each new cap comes with a quick tip the first time you put it on
each hint or message shows how much time it has left
action hints fill up as you do what they ask, then finish with a checkmark
walking, jumping and running each have their own hint, shown one after another and completed by doing the action
pressure and color hints stick around until you've actually changed them
sound
real recordings and a better mix to bring the rooftops to life.
city: the city below is now a real nighttime recording captured from a rooftop, fading in as you start
rain and thunder: real storm recordings, with a low rumble of heavy rain underneath and distant thunder rolling now and then, sometimes with no flash. when lightning strikes, three real thunder rolls follow a few seconds later, softer the farther away the strike is
spray: the can's hiss now responds to your pressure, distance from the wall and hand movement
interiors: step into a room and the city gets muffled, while the rain changes to the sound of rain hitting a tin roof
settings
the General tab is now organized into groups, just like Controls
General, Audio and Graphics each have a Reset all option that resets only the current tab
Storm and Rain indoors now have their own sliders in Audio
painting gets its own settings: lower mouse sensitivity and a narrower field of view while painting
Raw mouse: turns off mouse acceleration and the system pointer speed, in General
fixes and improvements
no more pressure loss or sputtering: shaking the can is just... for vibes?
the view no longer jumps on its own in Chrome on Windows
paint blends smoothly now, so translucent strokes don't break into hard bands
cap and color labels now sit next to the can, inverting whatever's behind them just like the crosshair
climbing down a ladder now counts for its hint, before only climbing up worked
Drops on metal is gone as a separate sound: those drops are now part of the rain
the can, your footsteps and the fans are quieter, leaving more room for the rain and the city
sound takes far less memory on audio outputs set to 96 or 192 kHz
on a slow connection the city comes first, the rest of the sounds after it
lightning lights up the sky and the moonlight more
capture mode has a clearer panel: one control a line, and in the free camera hold Tab for all its keys
the new caps are placed on the level, go find them
lightning no longer crashes the game when the Thunder slider is set to 0
paint dries, so a throw-up over dry paint runs less; new hints teach the controls as you play; and multiplayer tells you what's going on when the connection has trouble.
paint
paint dries after a few seconds: spraying over a dry coat or a rolled wall no longer starts runs; holding the can on one spot still does
fewer runs: the roller lays a lighter coat, and caps run less, from the skinny cap (least) to the fat cap (most)
on screen
subtitle-style hints teach you the controls as you play
turn them off, or show them again from the start, in Settings
pickups, and players joining or leaving the session, show as short notifications
a cleaner screen
multiplayer
a player's name tag shows their nickname, what they're doing and how far away they are
leaving a session takes you back to the title screen with your own paint, as it was before you joined; the session's paint stays only if you saved it
performance
other players' spraying costs less: the game reuses where their spray hits while their aim holds still
moving the stepladder near lamps no longer slows the game
no more stutter in the first moments after loading
key bindings, bug fixes and performance improvements.
keys and settings
a new Controls tab in Settings lets you rebind every key
your settings are now remembered between visits
crouch (hold or toggle) and tap twice to run are set in Controls
reset all puts back every key
Graphics shows your graphics card
Graphics has a performance test (a benchmark)
the mouse wheel changes the color
Q/E cycle through your caps, or change the width of the marker, roller and sponge
color picker
click the mouse wheel (MMB) on any paint to switch to the closest color you carry
multiplayer
rejoin within 3 minutes and you get your stepladder and what you carried back
strokes you made as the connection died are painted again once you're back
joining a session with a lot of paint is faster and no longer freezes the game
while you join or host, the menu shows how far the paint has loaded instead of PLAY; LEAVE cancels
the server no longer says it's full right after big sessions end
other players move smoothly on a bad connection
a connection that is slow only one way no longer drops
paint takes much less traffic
a reloaded or duplicated tab keeps the paint it sends
SAVE while reconnecting says to save again once you're back, instead of waiting forever
leaving while a session loads no longer leaves PAINT DETAIL locked, or says you're in a session with no connection
a game error ends the session with "the game hit an error", not "a new version is out"
fixes
placing the stepladder no longer makes the game stutter
a page zoomed out in the browser no longer draws more pixels than your screen has
paint cleaned off with the sponge gives its memory back
browser shortcuts and zoom no longer get in the way while you play, and the mouse's back and forward buttons stay in the game; F5, F11 and Esc still work, in fullscreen too
you can stand on water tank roofs
shaking and spraying the can no longer work at once
right Shift runs too
a trackpad swipe changes one color at a time
K takes a screenshot only while you play
on a Mac, keys no longer stick after a Cmd shortcut
a game opened in a background tab loads
the loading screen says why when the game can't start
if something breaks while you play, the game says so and offers a reload, instead of freezing
paint runs trickle the same at any frame rate, so other players see them closer to how you do
the PLAY button shows its ESC key in Firefox and Safari, where Esc resumes
a trackpad swipe's sideways part no longer drops part of a color step
the first release. you climb onto a hidden rooftop. it rains, neon flickers, and wires and billboards fill the city below. find your tools, paint, scrub it off and paint again.
look
the whole world is drawn in ink, like a manga page: hatching and cross-hatching for shadows, pen outlines and paper-white light. the only color in the city is the paint you bring. lamp light and its shadows are baked in, and fog and lightning are drawn over the top.
painting
paint soaks into walls, floors and props and stays there. it crosses the seams between props, so one piece can run across a wall, a pipe and a door. if you lay on too much, it runs down the wall. the can loses pressure as you spray: shake it. paint never runs out.
tools
spray can: your main tool, used with the caps below
marker: a square nib for outlines and handstyles
roller: solid bands of paint for big fills and blockbusters
sponge: scrubs paint off
stepladder: place it to reach higher walls
caps
standard: an all-round cap for fills and outlines
skinny: thin, sharp lines for tags and details
fat: wide strokes for throw-ups and fast bombing
spray: a soft, wide spray for fades and backgrounds
multiplayer
host a session and share its 5-letter code to paint the same roof with a friend.
saves
save your work to a file and load it later. old saves still load after updates.
